What Canadian Researchers Found:

The Magna Report, commissioned by the government of Ontario, found that Chiropractic care for patients with low back pain is superior to medical care in terms of safety, scientific evidence, cost savings and patient satisfaction.

The sciatic nerve is the longest and largest nerve in your body.  When it is inflamed, the condition is called ‘sciatica’.  It is usually felt along the back of the leg although sometimes it may also be felt in the ankle, foot and toes.  It can also be described as pins and needles, burning, prickling, or crawling sensations.  This can be one of the most painful conditions we see.  Sometimes sleeping, walking, bending, or turning can be difficult or impossible.

When Is Back Pain a Surgical Emergency?

If you experience any of the following with your back pain please seek emergency care:

  • Sudden loss of bowel or bladder function (ie. incontinence, urinary retention).
  • Sudden loss of sensation around groin and/or saddle area.
  • Sudden loss of anal sphincter tone.
  • Sudden sexual dysfunction

Low back pain is the 2nd leading cause of disability worldwide.

The self-resolution of chronic LBP will occur in less than 5–10% of cases. Acute nonspecific back pain is NOT a benign, transient or self-limiting
condition. Its rate of one-year recurrence is 20–44%, and lifetime recurrence is up to 72%, if left untreated.

The most frequent cause of Low Back Pain is “internal disc disruption” and is referred to as discogenic pain. Internal disc disruption refers to annular fissures, disc collapse and mechanical failure, with no significant modification of external disc shape (ie. bulge or herniation), with or without endplates changes.
